PLANNING APPLICATION PROPOSAL
We are delighted to inform you that a planning application will soon be submitted for the redevelopment of St Columba's Catholic Primary School.
As part of the proposed development, the existing school buildings - with the exception of the residential property - will be demolished. The new school building will then be constructed on a similar footprint to the original school building.
The redevelopment of St Columba's Catholic Primary School is being funded by the Department for Education as part of their School Rebuilding Programme.
Galliford Try has been selected by the Department for Education as the construction contractor to design and build the new school.
The proposed redevelopment includes the erection of a new 1 storey building (including 1.5 storey sports hall), with reconfigured landscaping and increased car parking, with cycle storage.
The new school building will include bright, spacious classrooms, a large hall, open-plan library, kitchen and support spaces. Externally there will also be redesigned hard play areas, improved playing fields, soft landscaping and retention of the forest school.
The new school building will meet modern environmental standards through minimising energy demand and using low carbon and renewable energy solutions, including solar panels on the roof and ground source heat pumps.
When complete, there will be no change to the location of the pedestrian and vehicular access to the site from Station Road.
There will also be no change to pupil or staff numbers as a result of the redevelopment.
We are holding a drop–in event at St Columba’s Catholic Primary School for anyone who wants to find out more or who would like to ask any questions about the proposals. The session will run from 4pm to 7pm on Wednesday 1st April 2026 and will take place in the school hall of the temporary building.
If you have any comments or queries on the current proposals, please send these to stcolumbasprimary.uk@avisonyoung.com by 10th April 2026.
We will be submitting the planning application in the coming weeks. Once this has been lodged, it will be available to view and comment on, via North Tyneside Council’s online planning portal:
https://www.northtyneside.gov.uk/residents/planning/search-planning-applications
Subject to receiving planning permission, the school redevelopment is planned to commence in Autumn 2026.
