BRITISH VALUES AT ST COLUMBA'S

At St Columba’s Catholic Primary School, we encourage our children to be creative, unique, open-minded and independent individuals, respectful of themselves and of others in our school, our local community and the wider world.

Our BELONG school values ensure that children have the core British values delivered and taught in a tangible way so they can be lived out.

Democracy:

Democracy is an important value at our school. Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard through opportunities such as our School Council which are democratically elected by each class annually. Each class makes democratic decisions with the curriculum and are encouraged to do so within extracurricular opportunities too. One of our school values ‘Navigate’ ensures that children know how to work together to solve problems and find solutions.

Rule of Law:

Children are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as Northumbria Police, Tyneside Fire and Rescue, Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade help to reinforce this message. One of our school values ‘Ownership’ ensures that children know how to look after themselves, the world around them and their school community.

Individual Liberty:

Children within our school are actively encouraged to make choices at our school, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. One of our school values ‘Empower’ ensures that children are encouraged to speak up, have their voices heard and that they are given the freedom to make choices.

Mutual Respect:

Our school ethos is based around core Christian values. Children and adults alike, including visitors, are challenged if they are disrespectful in any way.  Our school value ‘Grow’ ensures that emphasis is placed on the need of all children to grow together as part of God’s family.

Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs:

Children actively learn about the faiths of Islam and Judaism through our Religious Education programme. As a school, we have been recognised as a ‘School of Sanctuary’ which is a core embodiment of our values that, ‘At St. Columba’s, we all BELONG’. Specifically, our core value ‘Believe’ ensures that children’s individual beliefs are valued, alongside those of others.
