This week in science, Y5 have been having a closer look at how filters work. We dissolved a vitamin C tablet in water and tried to use a filter to remove the orange colouring from the water. This didn’t work. When we evaporated the water, however, guess what was left on the spoon? You got it – the orange food colouring.
So what good is a filter then? Y5 scientists were presented with a mixture of 150 ml water and two heaped tablespoons of school field. Their task was to get the water as clean as possible using sieves and filters. How successful were they? Compare the Before and After pictures below.
