A super start to Year One

We have had a super start to the new school year in Year One. All the children have settled in well, and have embraced the transition from Reception into their new class.

Our first term starts with our topic Amazing Animals, and Year One have loved reading some new books about some interesting characters. We’ve made friends with Penguin Blue and his friends from Blown Away; Fantastic Mr Fox and his family; and two little boys who must eat their way through hundreds of packets of cereal to win a lion (sadly the cornflake company ran out of lions, so they have to settle for some other animals instead.)

We have been getting creative in Year One and decorating our topic display with some lovely animal collages, and the classroom looks all the brighter from their hard work.

In Maths we have been learning about numbers and using our practical materials. We have been learning how to write numbers as words, continuing number sequences, and learning how to show the tens and ones in a number.

Roald Dahl Day

Year One had an exciting time learning about Roald Dahl and engaging in some Fantastic Mr Fox activities. We read the story and went on a chicken hunt through the school forest to find one hundred chickens. Unfortunately, we did not find them all, so there are still some chickens still hiding in the forest (opps!) Then in the afternoon we made some fox masks and went on a sneaky fox parade around school; Fantastic Mr Fox would have been proud as I’m sure no one noticed a parade of thirty foxes walking through the school.

As you can see, we have been busy in Year One and we continue to look forward to all the fun learning that will come in the following weeks.
