We are extremely lucky to have such a beautiful view from our ‘Early Years’ classroom windows. This week the children have been very excited to make some new friends. We have three resident squirrels who have been coming out to play. We placed some peanuts around the outdoor area and eagerly awaited their arrival. We were not disappointed.
The arrival of our new friends then prompted us to complete a mini topic on ‘squirrels.’
Did you know?
- There are more than 200 different types of squirrel.
- Squirrels are born deaf and blind.
- Squirrels eat seeds, nuts and berries.
- Squirrels can jump ten times the length of their body.
We invited ten children to lie on the floor to demonstrate ten times their body length. Wow, squirrels are really clever!
The children really enjoyed the story ‘The Squirrels Who Squabbled.” We learned that the best thing to share is a laugh with your friend.
Following this we collected leaves to use as a squirrels bushy tail.
We made beautiful collage pictures of a squirrel and gave them each a name.
We practised our cutting skills using Autumn trees, leaves, nuts and squirrels.
We have named the squirrels Cyril, Bruce and Blanch. We hope they come back out to play before they hibernate for Winter.
