The Mayans were the first people (along with the Ancient Greeks) to make a sort of chewing gum using the boiled sap of the zapote tree. The Mayans also discovered how to make a delicious chocolate drink from the seeds of the cacao tree. In Y6 we used these two facts to carry out two Mayan-related science investigations: 1) what brand of chewing gum makes the biggest bubbles?; 2) which type of chocolate takes the longest to melt? It’ll come as no surprise to learn that the more expensive the chewing gum, the bigger the bubbles; and the more expensive the chocolate, the longer it takes to melt.
