Mini Police

Mini Police

Y5 are working in partnership with Northumbria Police and the Police Cadets. St. Columba’s is only 1 of  8 schools across the North East who were part of the original pilot scheme. We are very thankful for all of the work that took place in order for our school to be selected. We have loved every minute of the exciting opportunities that this scheme has brought to Y5 and St. Columba’s.

The Mini Police project aims include:

  • creating a fun and interactive volunteering opportunity for children aged 9-10 years old;
  • enabling young people to have a confident voice and an enjoyable experience associated with policing;
  • introducing important messages to young people in a positive, engaging way;
  • developing self-esteem and confidence and encouraging responsibility and consideration for others.

10 pupils are chosen annually from Y5 to become our Mini Police. Each term, they receive a lesson from the Police Cadets based around important messages such as ‘online safety’. The Mini Police will then be required to share these important messages with the rest of their peers through a series of lessons and assemblies, particularly targeted to Y5 and Y6 pupils. The Mini Police take part in a Community deployment each term, such as supporting the Police Cadets at events like the Great North Run. As a reward for their hard work and commitment, each term the Mini Police receive a reward such as visiting the dog handling section of the Police Force.
